The island’s rare soil and climate system is formed thanks to the coexistence of two different soil types: volcanic granitic schist and calcareous clay. Additionally, the cool island breeze of the Aegean, combined with the island’s dry and warm microclimate, promotes viticulture—especially the noble and delicate Muscat grape.
Finally, the island’s mountainous geomorphology, in combination with the above factors, shapes the uniquely elegant and refined character of the wine from antiquity to the present day.
The privately owned vineyards of Hatzigiannis Estate, covering 60 stremmata (approximately 60,000 square meters), extend across both of these distinct soil types, at altitudes ranging from the foothills of Mount Ampelos (Karvounis) up to 1000 meters.
